Tool Information

Open Knowledge Maps is a visual discovery tool for scientific research run by a charitable non-profit organization. Users enter a research topic and choose a data source, either BASE, which covers all disciplines, or PubMed for the life sciences. The service retrieves matching publications and other outputs, groups similar items with an AI pipeline, labels each research area with relevant concepts and displays the result as an interactive knowledge map, so users can see the main sub-areas of a topic and the resources in each.

The tool helps students, researchers, journalists and librarians get an overview of an unfamiliar field, separate relevant work in multidisciplinary areas and learn the vocabulary of a discipline. It highlights open access resources, many of which can be read within the interface. The organization says maps are built only from the underlying metadata rather than generated text; clustering can still group papers imperfectly, so maps are a starting point for a literature search rather than a systematic review. No searches were run for this listing.

Open Knowledge Maps is free to use. The non-profit funds the platform through a collective model in which organizations become supporting members and help shape its development, and its work follows open science principles.

The website publishes a privacy policy, which it notes was updated to remove services no longer used, and an imprint identifying the operating organization. Content on the site is shared under a Creative Commons Attribution license.
