Paragraphica

Paragraphica is a context-to-image camera created in 2023 by designer Bjørn Karmann and presented on his portfolio. Instead of capturing light, the camera collects data about where it is through open APIs, including the address, weather, time of day and nearby places, and composes a paragraph describing the current place and moment. A text-to-image model then turns that paragraph into a picture, so the result reflects how an AI system imagines the location rather than what it actually looks like.

The physical prototype has three dials that mimic camera controls: one sets the radius in meters for gathering place data, one sets a noise seed between 0.1 and 1 that acts like film grain, and one controls the guidance scale, making the image follow the description more or less closely. The viewfinder shows the live description, and the trigger generates the image. The project also offers a virtual camera that visitors can try in a browser.
